For an exciting overview of some of Alaska's most popular lodges and fishing tours, read on.

Ultima Thule Lodge (ultimathulelodge.com)

Featured in the National Geographic's Ultimate Alaska issue, Ultima Thule Lodge is renowned for its luxury service, knowledgeable staff and experienced bush pilots. The lodge is fly-in only and located in the expansive Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Their bush pilots can arrange any type of guided fishing experiences, including fly fishing in Moose Valley, an area known for its fantastic fishing.

By offering alternative day trips and other activities, Ultima Thule Lodge has set itself apart from the competition. Whether it's a corporate retreat or family fishing trip, guests can choose between hiking remote glaciers, rafting the rapids or spending the day fishing.

However, if you and your group want a more rustic or self-catered experience, you may want to look elsewhere. Ultima Thule is known for luxury, not wilderness expeditions.

Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge (sadiecove.com)

Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge is situated right in the middle of the beautiful Kachemak Bay, an area known for its fishing. The eco-lodge uses wind, hydro and solar power, and prides itself on being one of the greenest hotels in the country. Its amazing systems and accommodations have been featured in National Geographic, Forbes' Traveler, the Discovery Channel, ESPN, the Fishing Network and more.

They arrange everything from photo safaris to fully customized Alaska fly fishing trips, while pampering guests with an in-house chef, on-site sauna and incredible scenery. Despite the amenities and commitment to sustainability, the rates at Sadie Cove are fairly reasonable. They start at about $400 per night per adult for an all-inclusive stay - meaning three meals a day, use of lodge facilities, a private cabin, and fishing equipment. However, private fishing charters or fly-ins do cost extra.

Drifter's Lodge on the Kenai River (907-595-5555)

If you're looking for a more rustic experience that centers it attention almost exclusively on fly fishing, Drifter's Lodge is a great choice. The lodge offers a more down-to-earth Alaskan experience and has been featured in National Geographic, the Lonely Planet and Time magazine. For fly fishing, their draw is on the fall season when the trout are at their peak.

The lodge has on-staff guides who know the Kenai River, know the fish patterns and are able to assist you to find great fishing locations and choose the best flies and casting techniques to catch your fish. They focus on techniques for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden trout and Alaska salmon, and are able to plan some of the best Alaska fly fishing trips available.

When it comes to planning a float fishing trip, Alaska is like the Mecca of fishing spots. The views are incredible, the waters are pristine and the fish are abundant.

You'll find rivers full of fish, beautiful landscapes, great people and an incredible experience. However, before you start booking, read on for a few tips that will ensure your Alaskan fishing adventure is one to remember.

Try a Vacation Planner Service

Instead of tethering yourself to one lodge or a specific charter company, you can opt to use a trip planning service. Most Alaskan vacation planners will work within your budget, booking your trip according to when you're coming, your fishing skill level and where you can find the best fishing.

One company recommended by the Frommer's Guide to Alaska are Sport Fishing Alaska (907-344-8674). They can coordinate all your need, including your lodging and local travel options.

Be Informed

Because most of the fish in Alaska are migratory, it's so important to know when they're in season, as well as where they'll be at a specific time. Otherwise, you could find yourself staying at an empty lodge next to a river with no fish.

Probably the best information resource is the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Sport Fish Division. You can access their information at sf.adfg.state.ak.us. Their site is updated weekly with hot spots, run timing facts and general educational information on fishing in Alaska.

For region-specific information, you can click on particular areas of the state and obtain publications or guides for fishing in that locale. You can also contact the local offices by phone (numbers listed on the website) for guide or charter service recommendations.

Book in Advance

For a peak-season float fishing trip, Alaska residents and travel veterans recommend reserving your place early. The best lodges at the peak fishing times tend to book up quickly, meaning you need to be prepared and ready to reserve your place. You'll also find that port cities and airport hubs can become overcrowded with tourists, so commit to your hotel and rental car well ahead of time.

Packing List for Alaska Fishing

Alaska is all about wild temperatures - from the hot noon sun to the cold nights or pouring rain. Plan ahead by packing clothes that can be layered, will dry quickly and will wick away sweat.

Also, invest your money in a high-quality, waterproof and wind-resistant rainwear suit that's designed for fishing vacations. To ensure a comfortable and safe float fishing trip, Alaska residents know you have to pack the right clothes and be prepared.

Anyone who really enjoys getting out in the fresh air to do a little bit of fishing may end up developing a taste for fly fishing. (...)

Anyone who really enjoys getting out in the fresh air to do a little bit of fishing may end up developing a taste for fly fishing. This type is quite popular and can involve fishing for trout or even bass. It basically depends on what type of fish you wish to catch! The great news for anyone looking to getting into fishing with a fly rod for bass is that there are several places throughout the United States that are known as hot spots. With a little bit of research, you could even find a couple of wonderful fishing areas within a decent driving distance from your home.

Striped, smallmouth and largemouth bass are the game of the fly fisherman. Some of them can be challenging, especially because they are a fairly aggressive fish that are large in size. As a matter of fact, many fly fishing old timers will tell you that their feisty nature is one of the main reasons why they like bass fishing in the first place. Catching one of these great bass gives a great sense of satisfaction and it makes the time spent making fly fishing flies all of a sudden, very worthwhile. It's what makes us head for the great outdoors.

Fly fishing for bass will require a rod that is able to stand up to the entire process. The rod will generally end up going through a tremendous amount of pressure once a bass is hooked on the line. Not being able to hold the weight will result in breakage of your rod or even the loss of the entire rod altogether into the water. Additionally, it is also important that you do a little bit of research on rods before you actually buy one. You can always go to your local tackle store and get a feel for your fly rod before buying it. This will ensure that you will have a fly rod that is comfortable for you and easy to grasp. These considerations will be important once the bass is caught up on the hook.

Once you find a fly fishing rod that is suitable for you, also ask the experts about flies and which ones are best. Some flies are meant to be used when smallmouth bass fishing. Others are used when for largemouth bass fishing. Before you leave on your fishing trip, consult the local store to make sure you have not forgotten anything.

If you're planning a fishing trip, Alaska is probably the best place in the world. The Halibut are massive, the salmon gigantic and the trout quite plentiful. (...)

If you're planning a fishing trip, Alaska is probably the best place in the world. The Halibut are massive, the salmon gigantic and the trout quite plentiful. For trophy-sized catches, there's no place like it anywhere in the world. So, read on for some great tips and tricks that will help make your Alaskan fishing trip a success.

Make Your Reservations Early

Between the months of June and September - the prime fishing season - Alaska sees over a million tourists. That means the hotels in Juneau won't have vacancies, the charters will be booked and your preferred fishing lodge may already be full. So, start planning now and book your trip well in advance.

Hire an Experienced Guide

Going it alone on your first Alaskan fishing trip is not recommended. A local guide will know where the best spots are, what flies or lures will work and how to catch the biggest fish. Their experience and knowledge of the area is invaluable, particularly for a first-timer.

To find a qualified local guide or charter company, try asking at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, a vacation planning company like Sport Fishing Alaska - who were featured in Frommer's and Forbe's Travel - or simply book with a lodge and use their in-house guide.

Follow the Fish

Fish may be abundant in Alaska, but they're also migratory. You need to know the best fishing season and the right locations. So, while a lodge or specific spot may boast some of the best fishing in the world, that may only hold true for a few weeks out of the year. Instead of being disappointed by a slow fishing vacation, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will be able to tell if your proposed location and dates will coincide with a fish migration.

There's also the secret fishing season in Alaska - the fall. Trout are still running, no one's around and fly fishers will experience some of the best fishing of their lives. Many river lodges and resorts specialize in an autumn season and even offer heavily discounted rates, saving you money.

Pack Smart

Remember that when you're packing for a fishing trip, Alaska can be blisteringly hot, drenching wet or freezing cold. The best advice is to pack layers of clothing that will dry quickly. You want to protect yourself from the sun, rain and cold, but also be able to remove clothing or dry it fast. Don't forget sunscreen, bug repellent, your gear, a small personal survival kit and your camera.

It is important that every human being finds an opportunity to relax and unwind from the pressures of everyday life. Fishing is one of the most popular activities in the world, and there are hundreds of thousands of anglers enjoying the sport every day.

For almost every angler there is a type of fish. Many people choose to only fish for one or two species, as they enjoy the skill development hunting that type of fish entails. All fish are different and have different habits. This is one reason that makes fishing so unique.

Some fishermen enjoy setting off on their own during their free time to see what the lakes and rivers offer. Others, however, prefer a planned fishing charter.

Fishing charters are the ideal adventure if you don’t have all the equipment needed to fish but would like to all the same. Fishing charters are not all the same though. And it is important to consider the following points before doing so.

1. Cost of the Charter

You will want to collect enough information to gain a good idea of what you get for your money. What is included in the price? What equipment will the charter provide?

If there is a payment or deposit needed before setting off on the trip, how much is it and is it refundable if you have a change of plans?

Do their costs seem reasonable to you? If so, great; if not, look elsewhere for another charter that is more suitable. Remember it is up to you to schedule the trip that you want.

2. The Length of Each Charter Trip

You should determine how long the fishing trips will last. Many captains will allow people to do extra fishing before docking. Does this cost any extra? If you are not happy with the answer, say so.

Also, if the time frame or duration on the water is liable to change, you need to know in advance. Some charters even charge by the minute. Since you are the person paying for the time, it is crucial you know what you are getting.

3. The Captain

Find out information that is available about the captain. What chartered fishing experience does he have? The more experienced he is, the more you will likely get out of your trip. Any captain should be more than happy to answer a few questions for you before you decide to opt for his charter.

These few points are very basic. However if you follow through with them, you should have a terrific fishing charter adventure!

Picture yourself lying back enjoying the calm of the vast body of water, hearing the waves gently crashing upon the hull while you take in the relaxing surroundings. (...)

Picture yourself lying back enjoying the calm of the vast body of water, hearing the waves gently crashing upon the hull while you take in the relaxing surroundings. Nothing could be more relaxing - except for a certain peace of mind which comes from the empowering sensation of preparedness that brought you here in the first place.

Boating Safety
To assure that your boating excursions are safe, enjoyable, and without avoidable problems, there are several important steps you should follow. Keeping your boat in good condition does more than just keep it looking good. Safety is the number one to keep in mind at all times while out on the water. Fortunately, there are now many products that make your boat look great AND keep you and your passengers safe.

For example, boat trailers will commonly come standard with a manual winch which will assist the owner in getting the boat off the trailer into the water. Handling a heavy boat however becomes an easy and safer task when you use an electric winch, which is powered by a standard car battery. Also, pulling the vessel using tie-down straps and a protective wrap undoubtedly will minimize any expensive and unattractive damage caused by traveling on the roads.

When you are boating, the chances are you will need to keep your boat tied to the dock so it doesn't float away. Be sure to have a buffer between the dock and your boat to prevent your boat from taking damage as weather conditions or even waves from another boat can make even a quiet pond rise or fall which rubs your boat against the dock wood. To protect your outer finish from rubbing the rough wood of the docking platform, there are bumpers you can use to cushion it. It's a good idea to have strong rope with you to use when docking the boat and also getting the boat onto the trailer when leaving the water.

Communications Equipment
Sailing the open water using just sails or a motor may be thrilling, yet being sure to stay within reach of the shore and the other members of your group may just save your life if things take a turn for the worse. Standard radio communication equipment is a must; and the ever prevalent and highly accessible GPS systems available today can bail you out if your radio crashes on you.

You should always carry at least one extra can of gas in case of emergency or in case you are out longer than planned. Also helpful is a convertible top in case bad weather comes in out of the blue - literally. It will help keep the inside of your boat dry and all of your passenger's will surely appreciate it too.

While your boat will generally require safety, communication, and transport equipment and aides, other gear used on your boat depends on what the intended use of the craft will be. A vessel primarily used to fish has dramatically different requirements than those used for recreation.

Make a list of the main reasons you'll be using your boat so that you'll know exactly what boating equipment you're going to need.
